March Madness – TS McHughs Round I

Mar 15, 2010

March always tends to be a really busy month for local musicians. As much as people complain about dying live music scenes and clubs turning into karaoke joints, people still expect live music around St Patrick’s day. And venues are also happy to pay for it. If this sense of supply, demand, and good crowds lasted all year round, it would be something indeed. Though we’d also probably have a big jump in AA memberships… Thoughts aside, now for the details.

Friday night @ TS McHugh’s in Queen Anne, 9pm-12am. Creeping Time has played the last 4 St Patrick’s days and pre-St Patrick’s weekends there. Really nice management and staff, it’s always a refreshing gig. They are right down next to Key Arena and are definitely a ‘walk-in’ spot, not necessarily a ‘regulars’ place. Hence, when the Supersonics left town, I think they took quite a hit. Anyway, we had a lot of good friends show up and it made for a great time. Paul and Jason brought their friend Smokey up from Portland. He definitely had the look of a music aficionado. It’s definitely more pressure to play when you think people are listening ;)

I’m not sure if it was the shirt (see below) or what, but Kjell was in rare form. There were a few of his friends/colleagues in house and so maybe that all jacked him up. But his jokes were especially corny on Friday. When we first arrived, Ken noted that he didn’t have all the new Irish tunes we’d been learning memorized (though he had about 7 out of 9). We called up our friend Ben Ireland and invited him out to fill out on those songs. He’s a great rhythm guitar player and has a big catalog of songs in his head. And its hard to beat his enthusiasm. We had a ton of great jams and took some stuff WAY outside.

Saturday night @ TS McHugh’s in Queen Anne, 9pm-12am. A definitely sparser crowd. Maybe it was that, or the fact that we played 3 hours the night before, or the sound was just well dialed in, or whatever… but I was super excited about our performance. For each of the first 5 songs, all I could think about was how we were probably playing the best version of that particular song that we’d ever played. Sam Russell and Beth showed up and we got Sam up to sing a couple tunes; Powderfinger, Christopher Moon, Black Beans(?). All in all a great warm up for Wednesday’s 6 hour session: 6pm-12am. See you there!
