International night at the Folk Review
Last Sunday night ended up being somewhat of an organized show, including three sets by three different acts.
Starting out the night was the Irish Folk-Rock-Stomp band Ockham’s Razor lite, including Kris, Judd, Tom, and me on violin. Luckily they played mostly material that I’m familiar with. Was really nice to get some drums in the mix (with Judd on djembe). Au Bickle was there with his mom and auntie Karis and he was sure rocking up a storm!
Next up was an Oud player, hailing from Saudi Arabia, and his saxophone wielding roommate (I’ll get their names from Tom). He was phenomenal. You don’t have to be familiar with a type of music to recognize top-level skill and talent. We close mic’ed the Oud with a small diaphragm condensor and it projected really really well. They had a number of songs ranging from traditional, a popular egyptian song, and originals. One original included a segment derived from Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, with the Oud playing that low-down melody while the saxophone and clarinet rode on top. Beautiful!
The “americana” Pie Float set was short, sweet and raucous with myself, Tom, Johnny, and Pat. I also tried to throw in a new BB King tune, Please Accept My Love; “co-authored” by Sam Ling, this is music industry tale worth reading. I was a little thrown by the rhythm as the band’s never heard the song. But like much of our other tunes, I’m sure this will improve as well.
A sparse crowd, but a real good listening one.
